ABOUT THE PROJECT
The brief
A new central library for a city of three million, designed to be as useful at 9 pm as it is at 9 am.
The response
All five floors open onto a shared atrium. Curved balconies let readers on every level see each other and the sky, turning a large building into a single, legible room.
The ground floor stays open to the street as a covered public square, with a café, an exhibition space, and the children’s library.
Materials
Exposed concrete, perforated aluminium, and acoustic timber slats that keep a busy atrium surprisingly quiet.
